Note that this is not a matter of version, but rather Apple's compiling options. Apple is using a similar (post GD becoming standard) version of PHP, but not compiling the library support in for some reason.

I have it working now.

I needed to upgrade to PHP 4.3.3, which I did *very* easily by using the installer at http://www.entropy.ch ... this comes installed with everything I need.

GD is disabled in the apple installed version of PHP.
