Creating an automated RSS or XML feed.

Hi,
I've just built a site for a friend using Apache, PHP4 and MySQL.
I did all the dev work for it on my PowerBook using Mac OS X, and installed Server Logistics packages for Apache 2 and MySQL.
Well it's online and working great.
The hosting company use Apache too and provide PHP and MySQL. One important thing is that I do not control the config. of httpd.conf or php.ini on the hosting companies server, naturally enough.

So to the problem:
I want to use PHP to build a page that will provide an RSS feed (probably 0.92 compliant for now) using MySQL data.
The page is easy enough to build, the problem is getting news readers to recognize the page as RSS. I've checked the validity of the code i'm producing and it seems fine.
I tinkered with my powerbooks setup till it worked, but to be truthful, I don't know exactly what I did that made it work.

Can anyone give me some insight?
