Application Optimization

Hi,
I'm designing a multiuser RSS reader for a client and it needs to have the ability to mark each item in a feed as "Read" or "Unread" much like an email application would. The problem here is how can I possibly store which entries are read and unread without slowing down the web based application?

I've tried keeping a comma delimited list in my database of the indexes of all read entries and when a user pulls up a page I check to see if the entry's id is in the list, but this slows down when there are more than 1,000 entries that have been read and are therefore in the databases list.

I realize this is a rather complex question for email, but if anyone can point me in the direction of some helpful reading that would be great too.
Thanks
-Mark
