This FAQ[1] (and others) probably does a better job at explaining all
this but in general, the more well-known the authority, the more they
charge. It's a perception thing, in the eye of your customers.
So a lot hinges on your traffic. If you're amazon.com, getting a cert
from a second-teir, non-root authority probably won't make your
customers feel very safe. On the other hand, if you need a cert for a
dev or staging box, it probably makes sense to go with the cheapest one
you can find.
