I always use apache-ssl over mod_ssl, even if i have to recompile apache; 2 reasons:
1) its faster/more efficient.
2) I once worked for the guy who wrote it (Ben Laurie) :)
3) While your on the case (re-compiling) you can add <plug>mod_perl & mason*</plug>
