I am looking through all the certificate authorities that are
in firefox's list. Can someone give a brief explanation of
what to consider when choosing an authority to purchase ssl keys
from?
This FAQ[1] (and others) probably does a better job at explaining all
this but in general, the more well-known the authority, the more they
charge. It's a perception thing, in the eye of your customers.
So a lot hinges on your traffic. If you're amazon.com, getting a cert
from a second-teir, non-root authority probably won't make your
customers feel very safe. On the other hand, if you need a cert for a
dev or staging box, it probably makes sense to go with the cheapest
one
you can find.

All of which is good advice, and useful link BTW. Just like to add,
that if it were my dev/beta box I'd roll my own: http://www.apache-
ssl.org/
Watch that link though cuss I _think_ os x ships with mod_ssl rather
than apache-ssl
<OT>
I always use apache-ssl over mod_ssl, even if i have to recompile
apache; 2 reasons:
1) its faster/more efficient.
2) I once worked for the guy who wrote it (Ben Laurie) :)
3) While your on the case (re-compiling) you can add <plug>mod_perl &
mason*</plug>
</OT>
Thanks
Robin...
*But please lets not have the perl Vs PHP debate again :)
