I wonder if anyone can help point me in the right direction with this.
I do lots of websites for non-profit groups who want email lists.
But I have yet to find one that can also capture the name, address,
and phone number (or whatever other info you ask for) in the data
as well as the email.
For example, I am using DADA Mail (formerly MOJO Mail) for a group
which loves it. It can be divided up into several lists, it is read-
only, and thus there is no spam to me from spammers who have gotten
the list address like what happens with Mailman. Mailman is what is
provided on my server and once that name gets out to the public,
the spammers try to post even though I have set it to moderated. I
have set it to discard emails periodically.
For this reason I prefer DADA Mail over Mailman which seems to only
be able to do ONE list. (But I could be wrong)
So here is my question:
I was told that the program called 'phpList' can capture name,
address, phone etc as well as keep the emails in its database,
however, it uses MySQL and requires you to set that up first,
unlike the others that already have it set up, or cause it to be
with installation. I have access to this MySQL service through the
Cpanel, and created a database of the same name that was in the
config file, but phpList still will not show up in my browser after
I installed it. So right now it's doing me no good and I have not
gotten support for it yet after posting to their support forums. I
have never been able to figure out how to use the MySQL as I say,
other than when the application is already set to use it. Otherwise
the install of phpList seemed ridiculously simple. The docs here:
http://docs.phplist.com/HomePage
were very cryptic on it I thought.
I have installed plenty of other cgi, perl, and php applications
that work, such as bulletin boards, calendars and such, successfully.
****Is there any other program, even one that costs $50, that is
easy to set up that would also capture info more than just email,
and/or can someone give me simple directions on how to make that
database recognize the program of phpList?
I could just put a nice little form that asks for this and the
email then enter the person in the mailing list myself, not a lot
of work, but I am having trouble convincing the group to let me do
that..(I guess they don't know how to copy and paste and think they
would have to do it even though I've offered -- since I don't think
that many will sign up all at once)
Once I knew this, it would allow me to use it for search engines
too. These are my two problems which to date I have not solved. I
have set up a search engine in Cpanel but it won't look at .php
and .pdf files and ignore .txt which are the bulk of my sites. It
only searches .html and I have very few webfiles that end in that.
I hope someone can help me. I have a friend who knows but he is
just too burned out from working on this stuff to help me right now.
