Re: DreamHost reliability (Was: Web hosting short list)

What period are you talking about? If the period is one minute, it's pretty easy to exceed 99.9%. :-) If the period is "forever," then I agree it is impossible.

On my *monthly* reports, I routinely hit 100%, as measured by Hyperspin.com, an independent monitoring service. (It's down to 98.899% for July because I was down for about an hour when I put in a 30 amp circuit for my 3kVA UPS.)

And that's with one provider and religiously keeping up-to-date with the latest software updates. I do have a UPS and generator, but have NEVER had to use the generator, and the UPS logs show an "event" every few months or so.

But I agree that uptime exceeding 98% is overrated, and that other considerations should be at least as important.

Sorry, forgot to include that. I was going on the assumption of 1 year. There will be a few people who can go 100% for a year but they also didn't patch their systems. I was also referring to all services, not just the os or web server. (email, www, dns, database, etc) _______________________________________________
