Re: protect images from download

I have to (thirty)second the thoughts of others in that this provides you no "protection" in that it only frustrates power users and barely keeps "honest people honest".

Even if the user is unable to view source on the page (don't get me started on folks that pad their HTML with a few hundred carriage returns to make it look blank...) or right click on the images, Safari provides the activity window (command+option+a) where one can see the urls of all images on the page. Copying an item from this window and then pasting it into the downloads window (command+option+l) provides an instant way to download any resources on the page. Firefox has a similar page info window that will specifically segregate all your images nicely into one pane...

One can use this trick to download youtube videos, even quicktime movies that have the "save as movie" option disabled (for pro users), and certainly can be used for your images.

Even if you utilize some sort of one use download token and put this on your images, the browser's cache can be gleaned fairly easily with a trial copy of FileJuicer (http://echoone.com/filejuicer/), let alone the full version... of course, as pointed out screen capture may be most straight forward for the average user.

Basically, you can try to stack on all the "protection" (read obfuscation) you want to attempt to prevent downloading images, but you can never really protect anything from being saved on the user's computer. This is simply the nature of HTTP (things get downloaded to your computer and then displayed).

Your best recourse is to watermark the images and post them in the lowest quality possible for your purposes —that or just give up. _______________________________________________
