Re: Language Choice Advice for new project

I am starting a new web site project involving very technical report and configuration pages and I am looking for advise on what language to use. This project is a rewrite of a web site currently written in C and XML.

The two technologies I am looking at are Ruby on Rails and Java, though I am open to others.

If you are already proficient in Java, you'll need to consider the learning curve of Rails. I've been developing for nigh 15 years, and have experience in many languages (C, C++, Delphi, Java, PHP, VB, COBOL, SQL), and it still took me a number of months to get a grip on Rails. I've been doing it for about a year now and am pretty comfortable, but it's not something you're going to "get" in a week.

If you have an existing database that doesn't conform to RoR's opinions, you'll find yourself very frustrated.

If you do choose RoR, you might also want to consider JRuby, which is a Ruby implementation in Java. Compared to the current 1.8.6 of Ruby, JRuby is faster. Plus, you get the benefit of being able to use other Java technologies in conjunction.

Don't get me wrong, I really like Rails. It's just not the right tool for every job.

Peace,
Phillip
