Safari's lack of Javascript <--> Netscape Plugin, work around?

Is there a work around for the lack of Javascript to Netscape Plugin functionality?

It's been a while since I've written a Netscape Plugin (1999 to be exact) and it looks as if all the documentation for Netscape plugins is quite old.
I've come to understanding that Safari does not support any means of communicating with the Netscape Plugins, directly from Javascript.
What I want to find out is if there is a means to work around this. We'd like to release something which works correctly in Safari.

The solution of Javascript <--> Java Applet <--> Netscape Plugin comes to mind, and for our plugin which is only need to perform a few basic functions, would be acceptable.
However there is something missing along these lines, I don't seem to be able to find anything on how I am now expected to export functions from Netscape plugins, which is even close recent.

I know that Apple is working on implementing the newer Mozilla Javascript NSAPI, which is great, but my client is not really interested in waiting on Apple to handle this, nor are they interested in having to tell the user to get the latest Safari, (which may/may not require a newer version of OSX,) in order to use this product. My own inclination is to not try anything tricky and just to implement this using the new NPAPI instead. This would mean that the product would only work in Mozilla/Firefox.

Questions:

1. Would a Javascript <--> Java Applet <--> Netscape Plugin, solution work? Will Java Applets correctly work with a Netscape Plugin to call Native Functions inside it, like you used to be able to do in JavaScript?
1a. Do I have to use the newer NSAPI in order to make my plugin available to Java in this case?

2. Does Apple have a schedule for Safari which supports the new NPAPI, which thus allows for JavaScript <--> Netscape Plugin communication? (Even a rough idea, by the end of this year, to end of next year.)

3. Does Apple have any idea about the OS requirements for the next Safari?

Thanks.
