1. Would a Javascript <--> Java Applet <--> Netscape Plugin, solution work? Will Java Applets correctly work with a Netscape Plugin to call Native Functions inside it, like you used to be able to do in JavaScript?
1a. Do I have to use the newer NSAPI in order to make my plugin available to Java in this case?

This doesn't sound like it would work. As far as I know there's no way to make a Netscape Plug-in available to Java.

2. Does Apple have a schedule for Safari which supports the new NPAPI, which thus allows for JavaScript <--> Netscape Plugin communication? (Even a rough idea, by the end of this year, to end of next year.)

The press release at <http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2004/jun/28tiger.html> mentions that our Tiger release of OS X will ship in the first half of 2005. The version of Safari that will be included with this release supports the scripting additions to NPAPI.

3. Does Apple have any idea about the OS requirements for the next Safari?

I'd love to comment on this, but I can't say anything publicly about release plans other than what's already been announced. We talked about this subject at the WWDC, but since I can't find any public discussion I believe what we said there was covered by non-disclosure agreements and not something I can announce.

I will say that we've heard requests from developers that need browser and Web Kit features to work across more than just one OS X release and we're taking them into consideration when making our plans.
