I'm curious if there are any plans to add support for the HTML
4.0 "lang" attribute to WebCore in the near future.
We'd definitely like to take advantage of the lang attribute. Other
browsers also seem to make font choices based on encodings, which works
well for legacy pages that don't have lang attributes, but use
non-Unicode language-specific encodings.
This is more than just a WebCore change. The WebCore part is the
easiest part, in fact. The tricky bit is the font lookup, which is in
WebKit.
I can't make any promises about when we'll do this, but we're
definitely planning on getting to it in the future.
