| hi all thanks for the inputs. the problems persist using the wonder source and gmake on Solaris x86. <rant> just for the record, it's not always up to the software provider (us) to determine the deployment platform. a lot of companies, for example, banks, insurance companies, retail chains, all of which are our customers, have invested in their deployment infrastructure. the infrastructure is not just boxes, that's not really what the cost is. the cost is trained personnel. retraining staff to administer a new platform is expensive. even if courses where free. we have sold some 30 webobjects licenses this year, with different databases as the backend. on exactly half we where able to convince the customer to deploy on osx, because they had no prior infrastructure. it was not an easy sale. not one chose to deploy on Xserve. they all wanted a G5 tower. because it was cheaper. no matter what we said about running costs. the others had HP or Dell machines running win2k, xp. no chance to bring in an Xserve or even Mac Mini. we have been using WebObjects for 5 years now, we've had a great time. but it's time to move on. we chose java, not because it's a fun language, but because it's cross platform, and at the time, it was our best enterprise alternative. we chose webobjects because the framework was mature, and the tools where decent. the framework is still mature, but stale. the tools, well, i like vexcode, because it's amusing to develop on an IDE that keeps you on your toes. we haven't and will never upgrade to 5.3, because we cannot even deploy on windows without jumping through hoops, even though it's java. like Ari said, this is downright bizarre. what good is it to save time on development, when you just pour out resources on deployment. what a shame. </rant>
couldn't make this work on x86 AMD 64bit Solaris. cornelius |
