X11 on IBOOK: no menu bar

I have a loaner iBook while my TiBook is being repaired (I hope)..

It has only 128 MB memory.

X11 installs ok.  But when I run it I get no menu bar.

Is this an iBook phenomenon, or related to insufficient memory?
