The following message from xemacs.org seems to say definitively that Apple's X11 + XEmacs is a bad idea.

Larry Paulson

Lawrence> I am running MacOS 10.2.6 and have installed XEmacs 21.4
Lawrence> (patch 9) using the fink package manager. I use Apple's
    Lawrence> X11, version 3.

This is known to be a bad combination. XEmacs has this problem with X
Errors with certain X servers on certain OSes, but not others. Until
we find someone who can debug it on the problematic server, it's not
likely that you can do anything but try a different server (XFree86
-quartz works fine for me).

Lawrence> What could be causing this? XEmacs works for most
Lawrence> people with a similar configuration. I have tried many
    Lawrence> things, including re-installing X11 and removing
Lawrence> /usr/local. However, I do not want to wipe my HD and
    Lawrence> re-install everything from scratch.

People have done that, and the problem doesn't go away. There is a
bug somewhere, but we don't have a good idea what it might be yet.
