If people don't want to pay for Panther, can't they just use XFree86 /
XDarwin / OroborOSX with Jaguar? No one ever promised that X11.app would
be free forever, did they? If you really like the software, then you pay
for the upgrade, if not, you live with the free OSS stuff.
I get kind of tired of the "I'm not paying $XX for some upgrade" debate,
but that's probably because most universities (including my current
employer) get either free or heavily edu-discounted versions of the OS.
