A subtle difference in what you originally posted and what I did is...
* You "tried _moving /usr/X11R6 aside_ and installing Beta 3 "
* I "simply _backed up /user/X11R6_ and installed Beta 3 again "
In my case, I backed up /user/X11R6 via tar and left everything in place
prior to installing Beta 3 from a fresh download. I do not know if this
makes any difference in the result but, at least in theory, it could.
