If I have two screens, one above the other I can't drag X windows between the
windows. In fact if X11 is the current application then I can't even move the
mouse onto the lower screen.


If the two screens are next to each other then I can drag between them and the
mouse can move freely between them too.

This is quite normal for X11 on the Mac when you change the screen configuration while it's running.


Basically, the (invisible) root window size is fixed when you start up X11.app (also with XDarwin.app) - it is defined as the smallest rect which covers all attached screens. Any movement of the X11 cursor is constrained within the original root window.

Consequently, if you change your screen layout (or add a new screen), you will not be able to reach any parts that lie outside the bounds of this original rectangle...
