Some other X11 problems

Well, after reinstalling 10.2.6 in order to get X11 running again, I have noticed a strange behavior that I hope some one can explain and tell me how to fix it. This behavior is not new. Gimp has always behaved this way under X11 windows manager. 1. If I run Gimp with the X11 windows manager it will not recognize tiff or png files, however if I start one of the other windows managers like kde or gnome or enlightenment. Then launch Gimp from that windows manager it will recognize tiffs and png just fine, what gives? I know the tiff and png libs are installed.
