According to xev the option key has a keysym of Mode_switch and command is Meta_L. I don't know what is going on, but I just made my own Xmodmap file and fixed it. I used one posted tot he list which I thought I'd done before. At first it failed then I realized why. I had created it using BBedit and saved it with usual (for BBEdit) linebreak. That meant Macintosh style break; once I re-saved it with UNIX style linebreaks things worked properly. Opps! The clash of operating systems...don'tcha know...
