I've got public beta 3 of X11 up and running. In general I am happy with it. I'm noodling about and figuring things out. But, one thing is not working at all. As I understand it the Alt key should be getting mapped to the Command key (when enalbe menu key equivilants is off), but it doesn't seem to be working at least under GIMP 1.2.1). I'd not really mind except that GIMP uses the Alt key to let you view and hence edit layer masks.

I've seen the discussions of swapping the Alt key to Option using xmodmap and I've tried making my own .Xmodmap (based on posts here that remaps to keycode 66) but that hasn't done anything either.

I'm running Mac OS 10.2.6 on an older blue/white G3 if that makes a difference. Can anyone help me out here and either get Alt working or, failing that, tell me how I can edit layer masks in GIMP without it (you'd think a menu option would exist but it does not seem too).

By default, X11 maps the key labeled alt/option to Alt, and the key labeled Apple/Clover to Meta. If "Enable Command-key equivalents" is on, some Meta combinations will not be passed through to X clients, because they are interpreted as command shortcuts to the server (X11.app).

I don't use Gimp, but it sounds to me like you are mixing up Meta and Alt. If Gimp really wants Alt, Alt is on alt/option in the default X11 setup, not on Apple/Command.

I don't use any applications that use Alt, so I swap the keys that mean Alt and Meta in my .Xmodmap, which allows me to enable command-key equivalents with no loss of functionality.
