font problem with Perl/Tk

I'm writing a small Perl/Tk application in which I use the symbol font to display greek letters. This script runs fine under linux, but the symbol characters do not display correctly under Apple's X11 (I rather have bitmap letters). xlsfonts gives me

I can see symbol characters in xfontsel. I also noticed that xfs is not running on my system.

I have a pretty standard installation: Panther with X11 1.0 and the X11 sdk. I have fink on my machine, but if I recall correcly, I installed the Perl/Tk package manually (which I also did on the linux box).

Any ideas? Could it be my Tk installation? From what I understand, Perl/Tk relies on X11 to display fonts.
