Wow.
The KDE Desktop came up, though the mouse and keyboard did NOT work

to work?
FWIW, I'll add to your confusion if I can...;)
I use the following to connect over the Internet from my Powerbook to
a SUSE 9.x server I maintain -
First I bring up xterm (part of OSX's X windows package)
then I type:
ssh -l username -X -C 99.999.99.999
(substitute your machine's ip or hostname for all those 9's)
I have no trouble using mouse and keyboard with X apps. I can't speak
for KDE per se, as I just run whatever app I need directly since KDE
would just waste bandwidth over a remote connection.
I suggest that you use ssh, not rlogin, unless you are on a closed net
without security concerns.
One note - if you do this from terminal instead of xterm it will not
work properly. I know, I made that mistake at first.
