If you use bash, then just be aware that the files bash reads at startup are

Actually, I think you may want to do some experimenting there. In my files I put
BFILES=$BFILES:.bashrc
or
BFILES=$BFILES:.profile
or
BFILES=$BFILES:.login
or
BFILES=$BFILES:.bash_login
or
as appropriate.

After startup, you can then echo $BFILES and see which files were loaded, in what order.

I was surprised to find that although zsh loads multiple files, which depending on how it's invoked (interactive, login, subshell, etc), in a particular order, bash only loads one of them. Which one it loads depends on the same issues.

In particular, I was surprised that .bash_login (or .profile) and .bashrc were not both loaded into a login shell.

Amazingly, it works just like the manpage says!!! (which is different from what the Zsh manpage says, not surprisingly.) I was used to Ksh, which, like Zsh, loads multiple files.
