Many thanks to Owen, Martin, and Kevin for the good suggestions and
eventual solution!
Now for some specific issues -
1) Yes, the error message from Console had a "t" in the lock file name
- that really confused me.
2) The permissions were correct for the /private/tmp
directory, however something (an errant install?) had
broken the symbolic link from /tmp -> /private/tmp.
/tmp was actually owned by the only account where
X11 actually worked.
3) I restored the soft link, reset the owner/group/permissions for
/tmp (& /private/tmp) and now everything
works fine.
