X not running on port 6000?

I originally installed X under panther. Then upgraded to tiger 10.4.2. X11 client apps on my mac run fine if started from xterm.

However, I X is not listening on port 6000 on any IP -- I've tried telnetting to 6000 on all my IPs from my machine. The firewall is off. I've run xhost +.

How do I get it to listen on port 6000 like all other copies of X server I've ever run. Obviously, ssh -X doesn't work (even though I've turned on port forwarding)... and I can't set DISPLAY on other computers to point to my computer as nothing is listening on port 6000...

I'm pretty sure this worked under panther. What is going on?
