Thanks very much Bill and Nick. The server is gigabit and switches pretty new, and I will check the nfs connections. I had a hunch it was to do with something being sent back and forth over the network, I was not given a location option for swap on instal, but was given on tile cache. Ill move it to local and see what happens. (The image sizes are often large, perhaps I can persuade the media teacher here to compress images before editing.) Thanks for the advice!
