GIMP remote session

I have a Linux box running Debian 3.1 and I've been fooling around with running applications on it from my PowerBook through a LAN. I've found that I can run many applications normally, but on occasion, I come across one that won't work with OS X's X11. One in particular is GIMP. It runs fine on the Linux box itself, just not through a remote X11 session. Here is the error I get...

$ ssh -X 192.168.0.2 /usr/bin/gimp
Password:
The program 'gimp' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)'.
(Details: serial 149 error_code 3 request_code 38 minor_code 0)
(Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
$

And just for fun, I've also tried "$ ssh -X 192.168.0.2 /usr/bin/ startkde". It's kind of funny to see it actually launch, but it doesn't run without flaws. There is a gap at the bottom of the screen that the KDE desktop background doesn't fill, and some icons that are supposed to be on the taskbar end up in really small windows in the upper left of the screen. I actually want to run the Linux box as a headless server so I would love to actually be able to use X11 to handle it's GUI remotely, although that isn't necessary. I would, however, like to be able to at least run the applications like GIMP remotely without problems.
