Yes, it is from the same source tree, with some important exceptions.
You alluded to the what is probably the most important exception. It
is my recollection that Apple's Xserver and AquaWM are free and open
source software, and congratulations for that.
The GNU-Darwin Xserver is different from Apple's in that ours links to
the core of Darwin OS instead of Apple's proprietary, high-level
frameworks. This is due to our policy against linking to proprietary
binaries. That is why we do not distribute Apple's Xserver or AquaWM,
and you will notice that our product does not appear as a normative Aqua
application, but as a standard X11 one. It is Unixey, as it were. It
is expected that all of our X11 apps will work fine with Apple X11 and
AquaWM. Reports are good, other than a few apps with minor mousing and
windowing glitches.
