I use XLiveCD http://xlivecd.indiana.edu/ successfully to run Ubuntu (Linux) X11
applications.  When I ssh into my Mac and try to launch xterm, I get
/usr/X11R6/bin/xterm Xt error: Can't open display:

Typing "set" I see that DISPLAY is not set.

I cannot find setenv although
http://developer.apple.com/opensource/tools/runningx11.html implies that it
should exist at /usr/X11R6/bin.

The XLiveCD is an Xterm.  If I run X11 from my Mac, DISPLAY is set in that
xterm.

How do I set environment variables?
