Re: Software Update for X11

I use VNC with Apple Remote Desktop to administer a Mac mini without monitor... and of course I can use that to work with X11 on that Mac mini, too. But since it's running in a (Mac OS X) VNC client window, copying and pasting is a problem. I for one would be quite interested if someone has a VNC based way of running X11 that runs more transparently...

I don't know if that's what you're suggesting, but it sounded kind of like that - so I thought I'd express my interest.

As to the X11 update, it seems to work on my MPB and PPC without problems.

Regards,
Jens

Kinda: you can run an 8-bit VNC session somewhere (which provides an 8-bit X display), and display the entire thing in a window on your (24-bit) Mac. A remote console if you will, where the console is a virtual X display.
You have to be able to deal with X window managers running inside a regular OS X window and some moderately intricate plumbing. But it does actually work pretty well. Let me know if you want more details.

What is: "VNC is a usable workaround?" Does this help with the 8- bit display problem?

Nor does it fix the 8-bit display byte-swapping problems which were reportedly described and acknowledged in Bug ID #4544604.

Bummer. VNC is a usable workaround, but I had hoped for more serious support from Apple.
