Installing X11 updates on g3 and g4 machines

I have a variety of Macs including g3 ibooks, g4 titanium powerbooks, g4 Emacs and dual core g5s - they are all set up identically and we use Xfig, Octave, and a variety of other X11 programs.

The g5s see the updates (both of them), and update through the usual method. The updates have not shown up in software update for the g3s and g4s and downloading the package manually and trying to run it yields the result Alert: this system does not need this update.

Has anyone successfully installed either of the recent X11 updates on a g3 or g4 machine? All machines are running 10.4.8 with latest xcode, and all X11 components. Does anyone have suggestions as to why the X11 updates won't run on my older machines?
