For instance, a series like this would be helpful:

1) Click into URL bar of safari.
2) Triple-click to select the whole URL.
3) Command-C.
4) Click into MSWord.
5) Command-V. (URL pastes)
6) Click into X11.
7) Select some text.
8) Command-C.
9) Click elsewhere in X11 to deselect text.
10) Click into MSWord.
11) Command-V. (What gets pasted?)

FWIW, if I follow those steps, nothing got pasted at all the first time I followed this sequence, and "Show Clipboard" in the Finder showed that the contents of the clipboard were "unknown". When I did it again, the originally copied url got pasted (G5, 10.4.10/8R218, X11 1.1.3).
