Beats me.  But I should be clear that I did *not* stop and restart X11 before
doing any testing.  IOW, it's _possible_ (maybe even likely) that I would see
the same behavior (not work on the first try, but work on second and
subsequent tries) right after X11 is started.  I have too many things going in
X11 to stop it now just for this test, and it may be days or weeks before I
have a need to restart it.  But when I do, I will try to remember to run this
test sequence first thing (already have a post-it next to my screen).
