Possible problem with X11

Jeremy:

First off - thanks for all the work on the Leopard X11 package. X11 is working pretty well for me except for my configure scripts not knowing how to detect OpenGL anymore (it sounds like lots of other people have related problems).

I think I have found a problem with the X11 launch process. I won't have time to verify it before leaving for Christmas, but I did want to mention it to you now before I forget.

I am using X11.app 2.1.1 (xorg-server 1.3.0-apple5) and OS X 10.5.1. I have enabled fast user switching.

I had X11 running under my normal user account and then switched to my admin account. I tried to start X11 as admin by clicking on X11.app in the dock (I actually want an xterm, contrary to the more vocal participants on the X11 list). X11 didn't start, and then I remembered that I shouldn't try to use it under two accounts at the same time.I noticed that the screen would periodically flash under the admin account, but didn't think anything of it at the time. I solved my problem using Terminal and went back to work under my normal account.

This morning I switched back to the admin account and the Finder became unresponsive. I couldn't restart Finder, so I had to reboot the Mac. I took a look at /var/log/system.log after the reboot and found it started this way:

This pattern persisted for thousands of lines.

The screen flashing I noticed probably happened once per attempt to start the X11 server.

Is there a way to tell the X11 server to give up when it can't launch instead of going into an infinite loop?

Thanks again,
Steve
