Re: Font display problem in 256 color mode

Hi Bruce,

I just installed IRAF on a new MacPro. The computer has a 23" Cinema
Display and the standard graphics card. IRAF requires 256 color mode to
function properly. When I set X11 to 256 color mode the fonts in Xterm
windows are garbled and unreadable. If I switch back to "From Display" the
fonts are readable. Ant ideas what the problem might be and if it is
fixable?

This is a known problem, for which I don't think a solution has been implemented by Apple yet. From a conversation I had with someone, it may have something to do with 8-bit support on certain graphics card, but I can't be certain my recollection of the underlying issue is correct. I filed a bug report back in October (ID 4811417).

I'd encourage you to file another one (even if it gets tagged as a duplicate). We (MacResearch.org) are going to Apple in April to discuss issues related to science on the platform. Although it's not only science related, I'll bring this up at that time as well to the relevant people.
