May I remark that ALL non-US keyboards require such
"contortions". (Alt-2 for @ gives away the fact that he is
using an European keyboard.)

At one point in time I had to type lots of French and it was
Windows so I had to switch to a French keyboard layout. I
typed like this for a couple of months and it was quite natural
once you get used to it. In fact when I get back to a US
keyboard I frequently make mistakes because at that time
the French layout felt more natural.
