With a lot of advice from the list, I broke down and upgraded to Leopard.  Things have improved greatly with the 7.2 X.org implementation, including running Gnome locally and many x programs running properly against our Solaris 9 systems.  I have a few remaining problems that I am hoping people can help me with.

First, when I launch the regular terminal, it runs X now as well.  Then I cannot get X –query to work as another instance is running. Its takes three attempts at quitting the application to get it to go away.  I presume terminal is sharing a config file with xterm, but I do not know how to get that to stop with just terminal.

My second problem relates to the first.  If I run /usr/X11R6/bin/X –query mymachine, with mymachine being a SPARC3/Solaris 9 machine, I get the Common Desktop signon that I want, but my keystrokes to sign on are recorded in in the xterm window, not the Common Desktop login screen.  Mouse clicks are working against Common Desktop.

I also do not know why the installation program installs x.org 7.2 in X11R6 instead of X11R7, but its definitely the right release.  When I start X –query, the display shows Xquartz server based on X.org Release 7.2, built on 2007924.

I realize that I am new to X and appreciate your patience.

If you upgraded OSX from 10.4 to 10.5, the 10.4 X11 package (XFree86) was replaced with 10.5's (X.Org).  You should not have any leftovers on your system outside of /PreviousSystems

If you are still on 10.4, there is a guide to installing the new X on 10.4 (albeit slightly out of date) on the wiki (http://www.x.org/wiki/XDarwin).  If you're feeling brave, you can certainly go through those steps to install the new X on 10.4.  It would be nice if you could update the wiki as you go to correct any mistakes or just comment on the process here, so someone else can update it.
