If you upgraded OSX from 10.4 to 10.5, the 10.4 X11 package (XFree86) was replaced with 10.5's (X.Org). You should not have any leftovers on your system outside of /PreviousSystems
If you are still on 10.4, there is a guide to installing the new X on 10.4 (albeit slightly out of date) on the wiki (http://www.x.org/wiki/XDarwin). If you're feeling brave, you can certainly go through those steps to install the new X on 10.4. It would be nice if you could update the wiki as you go to correct any mistakes or just comment on the process here, so someone else can update it.
