Let me be "the devil's advocate" here, since I am not speaking for
myself.
Besides the case where the display is remote, grepping for X is
also not portable. There are systems (certain Linuxes included)
where you cannot see the X process simply because it has been
setuid'd. In some systems, non-root users simply cannot see
any process not run as their own uid.
