Ah. And there, in at line 824 in hw/darwin/apple/bundle-main.c, I see the code that so confused me when I was trying to figure out what didn't work in my setup: I had run ps and concluded that Xqartz wasn't running, but it was in fact running, only under the name /usr/X11/X11.app/Contents/MacOS/X11.

Any reason it couldn't assign X_SERVER to xargv[0] instead?

(An *extremely* minor point, but if it eliminates confusion, why not?)


Yes, but not a good one. Apparently, in order to get the X11.app dock icon, the name of the process (ie xargv[0]) that runs needs to be named X11. :( So, if you try changing it to X_SERVER, it runs, but you get no dock icon.
