So can anyone confirm that the instructions here http://lists.apple.com/archives/X11-users/2007/Oct/msg00270
  are definately working? Maybe I am doing something wrong but I
followed the steps correctly.

It worked fine for me, this is what I ran

$ curl -LO http://people.freedesktop.org/~bbyer/x11app/xorg-server-1.2a2/Xquartz-1.2a2.bz2
$ bzip2 -d Xquartz-1.2a2.bz2
$ sudo mv /usr/X11/bin/Xquartz /usr/X11/bin/Xquartz.old
$ sudo cp Xquartz-1.2a2 /usr/X11/bin/Xquartz
$ sudo chmod 755 /usr/X11/bin/Xquartz

This last command was not in the original instructions. Although it is an obvious step if you install an executable, in particular one downloaded from the web, to check its permissions with ls -l, and to correct them if they are not right, this may not have appeared to Marc.
