Even after doing this you may still get the warning about no xauth
data. I'm finding just that happening when I connect to a particular
remote Linux box. (The connection seems to work, although it takes a
very long time (like, a minute) for an xterm from the remote host to
appear. I don't have the same problems -- slow connection and the
warning -- when connecting from a slower machine running Tiger on
the same wireless network, or connecting to other remote machines).

The no xauth data may indicate that the remote Linux box's ssh isn't built
with X11 forwarding support.

The fact that I EVENTUALLY got my xterm sugests that there was indeed X11 forwarding support.

Long delays are frequently an indication of DNS lookup problems on either
end of the connection.

Interesting issue --but then why does it work OK from another (slower) local machine connecting to the same remote host, or from the suspect local machine connecting to a different remote host?

But how is this legal plunder to be identified? Quite simply. See if the
law takes from some persons what belongs to them, and gives it to other
persons to whom it does not belong. See if the law benefits one citizen at
the expense of another by doing what the citizen himself cannot do without
committing a crime. -- Frederic Bastiat, The Law
