Well, the X11.app in /Applications/Utilities is 100% equivalent to
typing "login -fp $USERNAME xterm". You can look at the source if you
don't believe me.

Love to! Where is it?

I don't think /A/U/X11.app's source is released, but running strings on it is pretty revealing of this:


$ strings /Applications/Utilities/X11.app/Contents/MacOS/X11
app_to_run
/usr/X11/bin/xterm
command=%s
/usr/bin/login
fork
Couldn't exec
