I read that it might be some environment variable but:
I have no DISPLAY environment variable set (at least not that I
know...). If I set it before trying anything, nothing changes
This is part of the problem. You should have DISPLAY set
(automatically, not by you). it should look like /tmp/launch-2hKnRK/:0
Do you have /System/Library/LaunchAgents/org.x.X11.plist ?
At some point did you do 'launchctl unload -w /System/Library/
LaunchAgents/org.x.X11.plist'?
Try doing 'launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchAgents/
org.x.X11.plist'
