That's fascinating.  I just had DISPLAY=":0.0" before.  Would that
program have worked with that?

On the more helpful side, the project page for ds9 [courtesy of
google] ( http://hea-www.harvard.edu/RD/ds9/ ) appears to have contact
info for who to contact if it's not working for you.
