Re: Tiger X11 on Leopard

Trying to answer several questions at once:

I'm trying to revert to Tiger's X11 on my Leopard environment using the instructions found on:

I've completed all of the steps, but when I try to launch X11 it starts to launch and then fails. In the console window, I see the following:

10/31/07 7:44:56 AM [0x0-0x23023].org.x.X11_launcher[329] dyld: Library not loaded: /usr/X11/lib/libXau.6.dylib

Both the fact that it calls itself "org.x.X11_launcher" and the fact that it refers to "/usr/X11/lib" means that /Applications/Utilities/X11.app means that (for some reason) that X11.app bundle is still the one from Leopard.  (On Tiger, X11.app calls itself "com.apple.x11" and looks for libraries in "/usr/X11R6/lib".)   So, if you still want to go that route, I recommend you try renaming X11.app to X11-old.app, and then repeat your steps to install Tiger's X11.app.

OK, I know this is probably a dumb question, but I'm not an X11 guru...  We just install the Xquartz binary file, right? Do I need to worry about the source tarball?

Not  a dumb question -- I'm putting these releases out for two reasons:
1. To encourage developers to build the source themselves, and help me find / fix bugs
2. To provide users with a "better" X11 to use while they are waiting for official fix from Apple (read: Software Update)

Unless you want to participate in #1, you can stick with #2.  Virtually all of the real guts of X11.app are in that one file -- /usr/X11/bin/Xquartz -- so it's the file I will be distributing updates for.

If we install Ben's update -- will this interfere with a future official update thru Software Update?

It should not since only one binary is changed and it looks the same. If you fallow the instructions you can just copy the old version back very easily if it does cause problems with a software update.

As I understand it, this is correct -- the Xquartz binary will be overwritten with the version from Software Update.  Should this turn out to not be the case, I'll provide plenty of advance notice on this list.
