Re: x11 2.1.4 does not launch after update

Hello,

I recently obtained X11 2.1.4 from a Mac OS X software update.

Eh? What? X11 isn't put out though Software Update.

I did not update X11 myself, and the most recent version 2.1.4 appeared in
my Applications/Utilities folder after I had done a software update. I can
only assume it was the software update that installed the new version of
X11.

It definitely was not Apple's Software Update. You may have gotten it from a 3rd party update application... but not from Apple.

2. I have used the xterminator application to change some of the
behavior of
X11 in the past.

What is xterminator?

xterminator is an application that allows the user to change some of the
default behaviors of the X11 terminal. The home page for the application is
here: http://xanana.ucsc.edu/xtal/Xterminator/

Ok, that looks like it's just a GUI frontend to the existing X11 preferences you can set with defaults...

It might not work in some cases given that We're now using org.x.X11 and not com.apple.X11 (unless it saves settings to both...)

However, this application seems to be incompatible with
the latest version of X11 and/or OS X. When I try to apply changes
using
the application, X11 does its usual dock pop and disappear, then the
system
preferences open.

What? How is system preferences coming into this?

When I try to use the xterminator application to restore what is, as far as
I know, the default behavior to X11, xterminator quits and a system
preferences window opens, defaulting to the "accounts" tab. I can only
assume this is due to some incompatability between xterminator.app and the
latest version of OS X or X11, since xterminator never used to open the
system preferences when I used earlier versions of X11.

It has nothing to do with X11.app, that's for sure. Report this issue to the Xterminator developer.

To restore default values, just delete the preferences file, then restart X:

rm ~/Library/Preferences/org.x.X11.plist

2/24/08 8:22:15 PM org.x.X11[165] Quitting XQuartz...

This looks normal and correct to me... No error messages popping up. It looks like Xquartz is being told to quit. Do you have a custom ~/.xinitrc in place perhaps?
