Check your color preferences (X11->Preferences->Output) and make sure
it's not set to 256 colors.

Unless something went quite wrong with your installation, xterm

exist. Can you run it as /usr/X11/bin/xterm or as
/usr/X11R6/bin/xterm ? If so (which I expect), the problem lies with
your PATH environment variable: It should contain /usr/X11/bin. Are
you setting PATH yourself, in either ~/.bash_profile or in ~/.bashrc?
What is the result of running echo $PATH ?

Hi, thanks for your input. I can run both /usr/X11/bin/xterm and /
usr/X11R6/bin/xterm, but when I do so, X11 opens and the window is
blank (no prompt or anything). I have neither a ~/.bash_profile nor
a ~/.bashrc, but I do have a ~/.profile which contains "export PATH=/
opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:$PATH" (for MacPorts, which I
installed after the problems occured to test a local X11
application. I did not set the $DISPLAY variable there though).
