The other argument I've heard goes something along the lines of "your
code might not be ready to check in when you leave, but we need to make
forward progress on the code - including what you did - anyway." (The
validity of this reason depends on what kind of shop you run, or if you
are (as I was when I heard this argument) only spending part of your
time on that project/job.)
But yes, source control of some kind probably is the best solution.
